Api bukanlah materi namun merupakan efek dari reaksi materi-materi. Reaksi ini biasa kita kenal sebagai reaksi pembakaran.<\/p>\n<p>Pembakaran terjadi ketika bahan bakar bertemu dengan oksigen lalu dipanaskan sampai ke titik nyalanya agar bereaksi. Dari reaksi ini terbentuk uap air dan karbon dioksida. Ada yang oranye, kuning, atau biru.<\/p>\n<p>Ternyata, warna api ditentukan oleh seberapa efisien reaksi pembakaran yang dilakukan. Semakin efisien, maka semakin panas suhunya, dan semakin panas suhunya, maka semakin kasat mata radiasi elektromagnetik yang dihasilkan. Dari merah gelap ke oranye, lalu kuning, sampai putih kebiruan. Itulah mengapa pembakaran yang efisien akan menghasilkan api biru. Jika tidak ada oksigen maka tidak akan ada api. Atmosfer kita terdiri dari 21% oksigen, karena itulah pembakaran akan lebih efisien jika pakai bahan bakar gas karena gas lebih mudah bercampur dengan oksigen di udara saat dipanaskan. Dari jelaga pula muncul cahaya kuning kemerahan saat dipanaskan. Jadi karakter unsur juga berpengaruh pada gelombang cahaya yang muncul.<\/p>\n<p>Eh, tapi \u2026 matahari yang terlihat seperti bola api raksasa bagaimana bisa menyala ya padahal di ruang angkasa hampa udara? Dalam inti matahari gas-gas hidrogen bergulat dengan tekanan yang sangat besar dan suhu yang sangat panas. Akhirnya terjadilah suatu reaksi yang efisien untuk menghasilkan energi reaksi fusi nuklir.
